Biography

Wang An-Ming was born in Shanghai, China in 1926. She acquired her western name Marion at age nine.


Ms. Wang received her musical training in China and in the United States. She holds a B.E. Degree from Central China University, a B.M. degree (magna cum laude) from Wesleyan Conservatory, and an M.A. degree from Columbia University. She is considered the first significant ethnic Chinese woman composer to cross over into composing in the Western style.

Ms. Wang's works include keyboard, vocal, instrumental, chamber ensemble, choral, operatic, ballet and orchestral compositions. Her works have been performed in the United States and abroad.

Her works have been published by the Yueh Yun Music Publishing House, the Santa Barbara Music Publishing, Hildegard Music Publishing Company, Vivace Press, and Gold Branch Music, Inc. Her music is also included in records issued by Capstone Records, Albany Records, and EIL of Chicago. She’s listed in “Who’s Who”.

Ms. Wang is a member of Friday Morning Music Club, Sigma Alpha Iota, the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP), the International Alliance for Women in Music, the Society of Composers, Inc., and the National League of American Pen Women.

Her father was Cheng-Hsu Wang (B.A. Yale University; M.A. Princeton). Her mother was Eling Tong (B.A. Wellesley College). She was married to William K. Mak (M.A. New York University).
